Construction Engineering

From the houses we live in to the malls we shop in, a construction engineer had a hand in building that structure. Construction engineers correspond to contractors, construction companies and other businesses to design and create buildings. Within this unit, the students will learn exactly what a construction engineer does. From the preparing, to the design, to the overseeing of the construction, the construction engineer has a hand in a building from start to finish. The students will take what they have learned and try their hand at designs on not only a house, but also an office building

Standards: 
STEM-FET-6:  Apply fundamental principles of the engineering design process.
STEM-FET-8:  Students design a solution to an engineering problem applying math and science principles
STEM-FET-9: Demonstrate the application of STEM in the real world.

Target Outcomes:
  1. Why is construction important?
  2. What are the steps in the design process?
  3. How do we properly scale a drawing?
  4. What are the types of working drawings and what do they show? 

Know: Students will know…
  1. Students should know the proper way to use and decipher between the types of scales.
  2. Students should know the proper way to lay out their design using different floor plan styles.
  3. Students should know the proper way to lay out multiple designs using the different floor plan styles.
  4. Students should know the various aspects and tasks of construction engineering.
 
Understand: Students will understand…
  1. Students should understand how to use each of the scales properly.
  2. Students should understand the difference between bubble plans, floor plans and scaled floor plans.
  3. Students should understand how to create a cohesive portfolio for a multi-story building.
  4. Students should understand how to complete the tasks of a construction engineer.
 
Be Able to Do: Students will be able to…
  1. Students should be able to draw scaled drawings using each of the scales.
  2. Students should be able to create each of the different plans in regards to a house of their choosing.
  3. Students should be able to create each of the different plans in regards to a level of a building as well as a three dimensional model. ​

 
Lesson Outline:
Day 1
  • Review of Scale
  • Overview of Construction Engineering
Days 2-3
  • Overview of bubble plans, floor plans, scaled floor plans, and standard house measurements
  • Task: 
    • Create a bubble plan and floor plan for a house that meets the following specifications:
      • 1 story
      • 3 bedrooms 
      • 2 bathrooms 
      • kitchen
      • eating area
      • family room
      • laundry
    • Make sure to include kitchen counters, doors, windows, and bathroom fixtures.  
Days 4-5
  • Students will research and design a house that meets the following criteria:
    • Create a house in a box that meets the following criteria:
      • Research Tiny Homes and living small.  Pay special attention to how to maximize the space. 
      • The design must include:
        • main living area
        • kitchen facilities
        • laundry facilities
        • full bathroom
        • 1 defined sleeping space
      • Maximum size - 30 feet by 8 feet 
Days 6-7
  • Complete final design using
