Design an Apartment Complex
Objective:
How do we design spaces to meet people’s needs for living? Standards: STEM-FET-6: Apply fundamental principles of the engineering design process. STEM-FET-9: Demonstrate the application of STEM in the real world. STEM-EC5: Explain a whole systems approach to the engineering design process to solve a technical problem. STEM-EC7: Summarize and apply engineering solutions through the audience appropriate application of engineering graphics and technical writing. STEM-EA 4: Apply knowledge of the engineering design process to solve engineering/ technological problems in the STEM workplace. STEM-EA 8: Develop appropriate models. |

Overview of the Problem/Project
Design Problem:
You have been hired by a company to design an apartment complex. Below are the details of what your client expects in the designs:
- 10 apartment units –
- 3 - one bedroom units
- 4 - two bedroom units
- 3 – three bedroom units
- Amenities Area including the following:
- Pool
- Playground
- Indoor meeting space
- Office/property manager space
- All apartments and common area must be 1 floor for easy access. No stairs in the complex.
What You Need To Do:
You will document your process using Google Slides and will submit it to Google Classroom under each Part Assignment listed. You may work ahead, so make sure you are submitting to the assignment.
Part 1 of the Project - Define the Problem and Research
Due March 24
Begin documenting your Engineering Design Process using a google slide as you go through your project.
- Slide 1 – Your Name and the Project Title
- Slide 2 – Define the problem – Hint look above
- Slides 3-5 – Research 3 - one bedroom apartments
- Create 1 slide per floorplan –
- Include a floorplan picture
- Analyze and list your likes and dislikes about each plan (you need to have at least 2 likes and dislikes per floorplan).
- Create 1 slide per floorplan –
- Slides 6-8 – Research 3 - two bedroom apartments
- Create 1 slide per floorplan –
- Include a floorplan picture
- Analyze and list your likes and dislikes about each plan (you need to have at least 2 likes and dislikes per floorplan).
- Create 1 slide per floorplan –
- Slides 9-11– Research 3 - three bedroom apartments
- Create 1 slide per floorplan –
- Include a floorplan picture
- Analyze and list your likes and dislikes about each plan (you need to have at least 2 likes and dislikes per floorplan).
- Create 1 slide per floorplan –
- Slides 12-14 – Research Apartment Complex Amenities
- Find 3 amenity areas and include a picture - Create 1 slide per each
- Include a picture
- Analyze and list your likes and dislikes about each plan (you need to have at least 2 likes and dislikes per floorplan).
- Find 3 amenity areas and include a picture - Create 1 slide per each

Part 2 of the Project - Develop Possible Solutions
Due April 3
In architecture we can use bubble diagrams and block plans to help get a basic idea of our floor plans. See the example bubble diagrams and block plans at end of the document. Using the information you researched, you will be creating a bubble diagram and block plan to plan your apartment complex.
