Disney Imagineer
Overview:
Imagineering in a Box will show you how the collaboration of artists, designers, and engineers show us how theme parts are created. You will go behind the scenes with Disney Imagineers as you complete project-based assignments to design your own theme park.
Standards:
EA-4 - Apply knowledge of the engineering design process to solve engineering/ technological problems in the STEM workplace.
EA-7 - Develop and apply detailed plans to solutions for design problems using mathematical and scientific concepts.
EA-8 - Develop appropriate models.
Learning Targets:

EA-7 - Develop and apply detailed plans to solutions for design problems using mathematical and scientific concepts.
EA-8 - Develop appropriate models.
Learning Targets:
- How do Disney Imagineers work through the Engineering Design Process to create the worlds we see at Disney World and Lands? Can you use the Engineering Design Process to create your own world?
Lesson 1: Build Your Own World
Think about where you want to go. This lesson introduces the idea of experimental storytelling and the difference between and amusement part and a theme part. You will learn how storytelling and theme impact every decision made in the design of the land and the elements involved.
At the end of the lesson you will have a theme and mood board for your land.

Task:
Begin your Google Spark.
Slide 1: Title your project Imagineer World and your name.
Slide 2: Create 2 different ideas for Worlds and answer the questions for each on slides 2 and 3.
- What kind of land will you create?
- You can come up with multiple ideas and pick your favorite later.
- What is the name of the land?
- What is the story that takes place in the world?
- What do you imagine happening in this world?
- How do you want this world to make people feel?
Lesson 2: The Theme of the Land
In this lesson you will think about the deeper meanings of your land.

Task:
Slide 4: Answer the 3 parts of question 1.
- Question 1: Think of one of your favorite stories…it could be from a book, movie, play, game or anything else.
- In a few words, what is the story really about?
- What is the main lesson or take-away from the story?
- What emotions and feelings did it create in you?
- Question 2: Return to the land you were imagining in the previous exercise.
- What do you imagine it feels like to be in your land?
- What do you imagine people might learn when visiting your land?
- What do you want them to think about after leaving your land?
Lesson 3: Layout
To the right is an example of a map of Pirate’s Lair. It contains the key attractions, walkways and important structures. Notice how the theme of the land (adventure, discovery and danger) is reflected in the layout and design (treasure map style with winding paths, unknown areas and hints of danger). Watch this video: https://youtu.be/uWT8OgK6ywk Task: Start a rough draft of a map for your own land. Don’t worry if you don’t have the whole land planned out yet. You can leave a lot of blanks for future ideas. Focus more on the style of your map, what it looks and feels like. This can be created on a piece of paper. Add color to emphasize your areas. Remember to include your different areas: rides, restaurants, bathrooms, etc. Slide 7: Take a picture of your map. |
Lesson 4: Building Design
To the right are some actual research photos that were taken during the development of Treasure Cove. The pictures were taken to demonstrate the aged, overgrown look of the buildings in the park. Watch this video: https://youtu.be/D91NU39SnCU Task: Find or take some reference images which look similar to the buildings you imagine in your own land (you can also sketch designs if you can’t find references.) Slide 8: Create a mood board of images you have found and images you have sketched for inspiration for your world. |
Lesson 5: Landscape and Plant Life Design
To the right are some images taken of the landscape in Pandora and Cars Land.
Question: What does the plant life tell you about the land and how does it make you feel? Watch this video: https://youtu.be/lmKZHqFdcVg Task: Slide 9: Find one or more reference images for both the plant life and landscape of your land.

Lesson 6: Materials
Material set the tone and mood for your land.

Task:
Slide 10: Create a collage of material references for the surfaces in your land. It should contain images of every surface you can think of: roofs, floors, doors, interior/exterior walls and even small details such as door handles. Try to find at least 5 reference images for your collage.
Show this collage to a friend (or family member) and ask them what they can guess about your land from these materials (such as the time period, location and story).
- Did their ideas match your vision?
- If there were differences, what details might you change to better reflect your story?
